Избавиться от зависимости помогла любимая жена Екатерина, но здоровье актера было окончательно подорвано. Именно поэтому он во время спектакля упал — у Валерия случился инфаркт. Позднее удар повторился.
От всей тяжести проблем заболела Екатерина. Болезнь женщины прогрессировал так стремительно, что Гаркалина умерла через несколько месяцев после выявления болезни.
До пандемии коронавируса актер однажды уже попадал в больницу с пневмонией, и потом долго возвращался к нормальной жизни, учился заново говорить, ходить.
