И актриса однажды все же нашла настоящую любовь — в лице советского актера Евгения Матвеева. Их роман развивался стремительно, хоть и оба были в браке, и вскоре Артмане родила от Матвеева дочь.
Никто в мире кроме Вия и Евгения не знал от кого ребенок, да и сам муж актрисы воспринял девочку как родную. После развала СССР у Вия Фрицвны Артмане отобрали все включая квартиры. Посчитали, что государственное имущество отныне должно принадлежать государственным работникам.
Из-за этих переживаний у актрисы случился инфаркт, который позже повторился. Сначала дети держали мать в загородном доме, потом, поняв что не смогут за ней ухаживать, поместили в психиатрическую лечебницу, где Артмане и скончалась 11 октября 2008 года в возрасте 79 лет.
Они лишь успела за несколько дней до смерти сообщить дочь, кто на самом деле является ее отцом.
